The Bible describes a series of spiritual rebellions, the first of which occurs in Eden with a supernatural figure—later known as Satan or the devil—whose actions introduce death and separation from God, ending humanity’s original relationship with Him. In Genesis 3, this figure is called “the serpent,” but the Hebrew Bible never explicitly names him Satan; that connection is only made much later, especially in the New Testament’s book of Revelation. In the book of Job, the term “the Satan” (literally “the accuser” or “the adversary”) refers to a member of the heavenly court whose job is to test and challenge, not to act as the devil figure familiar from later Christian theology.
