The Bible describes a series of spiritual rebellions, the first of which occurs in Eden with a supernatural figure—later known as Satan or the devil—whose actions introduce death and separation from God, ending humanity’s original relationship with Him. In Genesis 3, this figure is called “the serpent,” but the Hebrew Bible never explicitly names him Satan; that connection is only made much later, especially in the New Testament’s book of Revelation. In the book of Job, the term “the Satan” (literally “the accuser” or “the adversary”) refers to a member of the heavenly court whose job is to test and challenge, not to act as the devil figure familiar from later Christian theology. Over time, especially in the Second Temple period and into the New Testament, the original rebel from Eden is increasingly identified with Satan, the ruler of the dead and ultimate adversary of humanity, gaining authority because all humans die and enter his domain. The Bible uses various names and images for this figure across different eras, reflecting evolving theological perspectives rather than contradictions. The connection between Genesis 3’s serpent and Job’s accuser is not direct in the Hebrew Bible; the idea that they are the same being develops later. Ultimately, the portrayal of Satan evolves from an unnamed supernatural rebel in Eden, to a heavenly accuser in Job, to the devil and ruler of the dead in later Jewish and Christian thought, with different titles and roles reflecting this development. #michaelheiser #gardenofeden #bible #newtestament #eden #bibleverse #genesis
