Imabari Castle is known as one of Japan's three major sea castles, along with Takamatsu Castle in Kagawa Prefecture and Nakatsu Castle in Oita Prefecture. It is said that Imabari Castle once had three moats, each surrounded by a water moat that connected to the sea. It was the center of the Imabari domain under the Tokugawa shogunate during the Edo period, and was ruled by a branch of the Matsudaira Hisamatsu clan for most of its history. After the Battle of Sekigahara, which began in 1600, Tokugawa Ieyasu appointed the shogun Todo Takatora as the daimyo of the Imabari domain with 200,000 koku. Todo Takatora was expected to take control of the Seto Inland Sea and counter Fukushima Masanori, who was installed by Toyotomi Hideyoshi in Hiroshima Castle on the other side of the Seto Inland Sea. Todo Takatora first settled in Kokufu Castle, atop Mt. Karako, a few kilometers from Imabari, but due to its inconvenient location, he decided to build a new castle and castle town along the coast. Todo Takatora was also known as an excellent castle designer and built Uwajima Castle and Ozu Castle. Imabari Castle was completed in 1608, six years after construction began. In 1609, immediately after Imabari Castle was completed, Todo Takatora was transferred to the Tsu domain. In 1635, the Hisamatsu Matsudaira clan, led by Tokugawa Ieyasu's nephew Sadafusa Matsudaira, entered Imabari on behalf of Todo Takatora, and their descendants ruled Imabari for the remainder of the Edo period. In 2006, this castle was selected as one of Japan's top 100 castles by the Japan Castle Foundation. • 【大洲城下のお舟めぐりを楽しむ】[Enjoy a boat trip ar...
