Bernhard, XVI secolo   / musicamedievale   • The first Cistercians were essentially preoccupied with the revival of the original forms of monastic life, if necessary, by means of radical reforms that could bring about a revision of the practices that had been established over the centuries. No aspect of the religious life escaped their scrutiny and, of course, the question of plainchant soon found itself at the centre of their attentions. According to the thinking of Saint Stephen Harding, the third abbot of Citeaux, the way to recover the original purity of ecclesiastic chant was to return to the Roman practice. But unfortunately the first decades of the 12th century found Rome and Italy embroiled in violent political upheaval and sending precentors such a distance to compare the conditions of musical traditions seemed a very perilous undertaking. For this reason Stephen Harding preferred to dispatch his precentors to Metz which, at the time, still enjoyed the reputation of having preserved a form of liturgical chant very close to that of Rome. In the 9th century Metz had been one of the principal centres of the Roman chant in the Carolingian empire. The Cistercian precentors were disappointed by what they had observed in Metz, where the tradition seemed to them to have become corrupted and faulty. Nonetheless, and in spite of the hostility of the future Saint Bernard and most of the young Cistercians in favour of a radical revision of the traditional practices, Stephen Harding ordered his monks to return to Metz and to make copies of the existing liturgical books. This Metz version was practised in Cistercian liturgies until the death of Stephen Harding in 1134. Metz had preserved a highly sophisticated system of ornamentation which does, indeed, seem rather close to that of the Roman chant of the 12th centurv as we know it. But this manner of singing must have disturbed the young Cistercians of the second generation infatuated by the ideals of purity devoid of superfluity. Moreover, the Metz melodies contained certain figures that to their cars sounded like incoherent violations of the modal language. Through the Metz chant Stephen Harding desired to remain faithful to the Roman chant which he new from having spent some time in the Eternal City during his youth'. After his death the Cistercians gave up trying to find the authentic Church chant in what still existed. They decided to recast the liturgical repertory by systematically rethinking each piece according to the criteria established by theory, a theory that would have to be created for the purpose. The leading artisan of this reform was Guy d'Eu who sought to found the chant on a heptatonic acoustic system. His speculations led to the re-creation of Gregorian chant from which superfluous ornaments and figures that were alien to the logical design of the theoretical mysteries were excluded. The modal character of each piece was to be clearly apparent without ambiguity or a mixture of modes. Within the mode each note of the scale was to maintain its hierarchical rank, thanks to which the discourse could be correctly declined. This resulted in a heightened presence of the principal notes that thereby intelligibly manifested their polarizing function in the course of the work.
