Lyon is magnificently situated at the confluence of the Rhône and Saône rivers, which define its central, vibrant peninsula, known as the Presqu'île. Historically, Lyon was founded by the Romans as Lugdunum in 43 BC and later became a major European powerhouse during the Renaissance, renowned for its banking and silk-weaving industries. Today, the city maintains its cultural significance, being internationally recognized as the Capitale Mondiale de la Gastronomie, or the World Capital of Gastronomy. The city’s Vieux Lyon (Old Town) contains one of Europe’s most extensive collections of Renaissance architecture, characterized by the secret passageways known as traboules. It is also famous as the birthplace of modern cinema, home to the pioneering Lumière brothers. The official currency is the Euro (€), and the language is French.
