Togashi's Trans Characters

From Yu Yu Hakusho to Level E to Hunter x Hunter, gender identity has been a consistent aspect of Yoshihiro Togashi's work. It has taken on many forms over the years, and in that time, the language and social impact of discussions surrounding the subject have changed. This video aims to inspect that evolution and offer my own feelings on what Togashi's trans characters bring to the table. *Minor correction (as of 4/14): When talking about Mikihisa, I incorrectly lumped the words "boku" and "watashi" together as gender neutral terms, but that's technically not accurate. "Boku" and "ore" are both generally used by guys, but which one people use depends on various circumstances like the formality of a situation, the speaker's relationship to the person being addressed, etc. I say generally because it isn't always the case with "boku." A tomboyish girl might refer to herself with "boku" to align with that more boyish/genderfluid attitude. This is sometimes used in anime for female characters who are less conventionally feminine but who don't necessarily identify with masculinity itself (though there are also transmasc and transfem characters who use "boku," transmasc characters who use "watashi," ...it's not as simple as "he/she/they" in English). When Mikihisa uses "ore" instead of "boku," it comes off as him being more assertive about his masculinity. This was just a case of me knowing what I wanted to say but not actually verbalizing it in the correct way. I can assume most people either didn't even notice or got the gist of what I meant, but I try to be as clear as I can and want to avoid misinforming people when possible. Sorry for the mistake!
