Out for the Count. Some hoodlum in the street has been calling Angelo names, so Mr Pinner - having been a boxing champion in his prime - offers his coaching services to help him stand up for himself. Mike soon decides to join in the training, much to Rita's disapproval. This episode was originally broadcast on Thursday, 5th October, 1989. This is really quite an unusual one, in the sense that normally Angelo's obsession of the week tends to be positive, zany, or at the very least theoretically harmless. And while the fitness aspect is used by Mike to counter any of Rita's negativity about boxing, where it all ends up is surprising and relatively sinister. I did enjoy how the lessons were learned by all, including Mr Pinner being dropped right in it, and the uncredited heavy who receives quite a clever comeuppance. There are some funny visual gags as Angelo outperforms all of Mr P's expectations, including returning with the magazine so quickly and the smouldering skipping rope. If I may offer a mild criticism, I'm not sure all the physical comedy is staged quite as well as it could have been (particularly Pinner's series of minor injuries), but I got a good laugh out of the training montage, well over a decade before Team America similarly lampooned such things. Good fun, mostly, with more black eyes and blood than usual. Stay tuned at the beginning and end for some CITV clips with Jeanne Downs and Scally.
