This video explains The WOMAN trial and how to conduct the trial at your hospital. The #WOMAN Trial tested Tranexamic Acid (#TXA) for the treatment of postpartum haemorrhage patients. Coordinated by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) Clinical Trials Unit (CTU), this was an international, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial. The trial tested whether tranexamic acid, a blood clot stabiliser that was discovered in Japan in the 1950s, could become an essential tool for fighting excessive bleeding soon after giving birth. This condition, known as postpartum haemorrhage, is the number one cause of maternal death around the world, particularly in low and middle-income countries. The WOMAN trial showed that if given within 3 hours, TXA can reduce the risk of death due to bleeding by one third. We value working with patients and the public and they are at the centre of our research activities. The Clinical Trials Unit (CTU) is a world-renowned centre of excellence in the design, conduct, analysis, and reporting of clinical trials and a fully registered unit with the UK Clinical Research Collaboration (UKCRC). The CTU is based within the Department of Population Health. It has a strong focus on clinical trial methodology, including methods for data monitoring, trial reporting, adaptive designs, non-inferiority trials, surrogate endpoints, the multiplicity of data (eg subgroup analyses, composite endpoints, repeated measures) and methods for systematic reviews, and also conducts qualitative research into the views of trial participants. We bring to these processes extensive knowledge and practical experience of trial coordination, gained from holding a respected position within the clinical scientific community. To date, this has led to successful collaborations in many clinical fields, including cardiology, emergency care, adult and neonatal respiratory failure, liver disease, and reproductive health. 🌎 Follow LSHTM-CTU to keep updated on our research: →Twitter: @CTU_LSHTM →Facebook: @CTU.LSHTM →Website: https://ctu.lshtm.ac.uk/ #WOMANtrial #publichealth #educational
