MAYBE, Bobby Pedrick, Verve #10402 1966 Flipside: Karine – Here’s another really great uncharted cover song from my collection. Bobby Pedrick was born Robert John Pedrick Jr. on January 3, 1946. He is an America singer-songwriter and is best known for his 1979 hit single “SAD EYES”, which reached #1 on the US billboard hot 100. His early roots began in 1958 (12 years old) when he recorded “WHITE BUCKS AND SADDLE SHOES” (Big Top #3004). It was written by icon song writers Doc Pomus & Mort Shuman. “WHITE BUCKS AND SADDLE SHOES” charted Dec. 1958 for 4 weeks & reached #74. Bobby would also have 4 songs charted nationally on Billboard as Robert John. The biggest of the 4 was a cover of “THE LION SLEEPS TONIGHT” (Atlantic #2846). It was a giant hit for him. His version charted in March 1972 for 17 weeks and reached #3. The Tokens’ version reached #1 on Billboard in Dec. 1961. In 1963 Bobby Pedrick would record “MY JELLY BEAN” (Diamond #141) as Bobby and The Consoles. Bobby would go on to record many great cover songs; “HEY THERE LONELY GIRL”, HUSHABYE”, “SHERRY” (Four Seasons song & a really great cover version), “BREAD AND BUTTER, and the list goes on (an endless amount of great recordings). Record labels were Columbia, Arista, Diamond, Atlantic, EMI, and A&M records. Bobby Pedrick’s version of “MAYBE,” originally recorded by The Chantels, in 1957 is the best cover of “MAYBE” that I have heard in my 62 years as a record collector. Enjoy!
