Fire burning marihuana plants STORYLINE: The Mexican army raided poppy plantations in Guerrero state on Tuesday and proceeded to destroy the plants which are used to produce heroin. The 35th Infantry Batallion eradicated two plantations, situated in the remote highlands of the Chilpancingo Mountains, a six-hour drive southwest of Mexico City. Local drug traffickers sow the plants in rugged mountainous areas to avoid being detected by the authorities. Mixed plantations of heroin poppies and marihuana are common. The plantations targetted by the army on Tuesday had both. When the plant is still short, planes are used to spray poison over the area, but when the plants have matured the army has to go in and destroy them by hand. These poppies were already one metre high. Soldiers used sticks to destroy the bulb of the poppies, which produces the active substance from which opium is extracted. This year the Mexican army has destroyed eight thousand 716 hectares (21 thousand 790 acres) of poppy plantations in the country. The Mexican army has 385 drug eradication bases and 450 for interception of drug convoys. It is estimated that Mexican poppy production is the third biggest source of illegal opium products destined for the US market.
