Paper presented at the David Nichol Smith Seminar (online), Adelaide, December 2020. On page 132 of one of the books in the Austen Family Music Collection is the ‘Hindoo Girl’s Song’. It is in Jane Austen’s handwriting, both music and words. Among Austen’s manuscript song collection, there are several that dramatise and sentimentalise the plight of unfortunate young women. ‘The Hindoo Girl’s Song’ could be loosely grouped with these female laments. The song is in a sense the most ‘exotic’ song in Austen’s collection. However, it is in almost every way a false exoticism. It probably says much more about British imperial attitudes and gender dynamics of the time than about any historical Indian woman. It is possible, however, that it could provide some insight into the lives of Indian women that is missing from other historical sources.
