Documentary by Dieter Bartels & Helen Huwaë. Inquiries about the full Dutch or English DVD version: dieter at nunusaku.com. In this documentary, the filmmakers capture the Moluccan spirit through the powerful portrayal of the trials and tribulations of this Eastern Indonesian ethnic minority in The Netherlands that counters the perception of Moluccans as misfits and failures. Shortly after World War II, Moluccan soldiers, who had served loyally in the Dutch Colonial Army in the Netherlands-Indies, were brought with their families to The Netherlands. Overcoming broken promises, humiliations, betrayals and homesickness, they prevailed. They instilled a strong sense of identity and vital social values in their progeny and the future generations, enabling the cultural survival of Moluccans in diaspora despite widespread intermarriage with the Dutch as well as increasing integration into Dutch society. Native Moluccan Helen Huwaë adeptly interweaves the story of her family with the history of all exiles in The Netherlands and their arduous and agonizing path to successful integration of one of the first colored ethnic groups arriving in continental Europe after World War II. The audience will be laughing and crying with the Moluccans. They will empathize with the filmmakers' own family ordeals that are part of this traumatic process affecting both the host society and the immigrants. Viewers will perceive the Moluccan immigrant experience to be universal and gain insight into the adaptation problems of the multitude of immigrants from developing countries that are still streaming nonstop into Europe. The film also has great relevance in light of the hot immigration and integration debate within the European Union, North America, and anywhere in the world.
