HOW THE FORMER MAROONS CALCULATED THEIR AGE By André R.M. Pakosie In this video documentary I explain how the former Maroons, who had no western education, still knew their age. And how the successive Surinamese governments of the past, out of arrogance, have also treated the Maroons here with contempt. During the mass registration of Maroons in the Surinamese population register in 1963, the registration officials were free to use their creativity in determining a Maroon's age. The fact that a Maroon did not have a Western education was reason enough for the officials to assume that the person did not know his or her own age, and they had to determine the person's age. As an example, I will use the age determination of gaanman Gazon Matodja. His age was estimated and determined by the responsible registration official and was found to be 16 years younger than his actual age. I just wanted to point out that the generation of Maroons before us, who had no western education, had their own way of determining their age. So there would have been no need to misjudge the age of the former Maroons and register them incorrectly in the population register if the officials of the time had a better attitude towards the Maroons and did not look down on them. If the officials had not assumed that an illiterate Marron could not know his age.
