Finding WWI Trench Art in Normandy

A Brief History on Trench Art: Trench art is usually associated with WWI, the First World War, from 1914- 1918 although the practice was continued in WWII with soldiers who were prisoners of war. During WWI, on the Western Front in Northern France and Belgium, the Allies fought against the Germans in trenches, hence the name. Soldiers would make art and items from old bullet casings and shrapnel found on the battlefield. These artworks now serve as a lasting legacy of the First World War and help tell a story of the very human side of war. Thank you to Patricia and her husband at the shop, Brocante de Jolies Choses, in Bayeux, France for the interview recorded in June 2023. They have an amazing collection of WWI and WWII items.
