At The Disco, BANNERS, Pentatonix, Blink-182, …) we were pretty excited by the prospect of working with someone whose cup of cheese is outside of our normal cheesewheel-house. what could we learn from an ear like Sam’s? as it turned out, a lot. seeing Sam’s process was really neat—the way he closes his eyes and hums a choice la-dee-da, the way he cuts and reworks to serve the economy of a song—we spoke the same language, which is rare and rad. Anyways, we picked a form and then he sent us on our way to flesh out the lyrics before meeting back up. The form was frustratingly specific though, and, in complaining about my inability to find words to the band, I found myself comparing it to this Sylvia Plath villanelle a lot of my old poetry classes used to reference. in a sort of hail-mary attempt, I rearranged the poem to fit and reinterpreted it in a way that felt true to my life, and this is what came out. when we met back up with Sam, it turned out Plath’s nephew was a high school acquaintance of his and everything felt meant-to-be.
