Although I think it's pretty well known locally, this trail was an unexpected bonus for me when I rode Heartbreak Ridge in the summer of 2024 - • Rocky, Slabby Awesomeness! 2 Minute T... . I finished that route and had seen some vague info about a trail up on Creagan Riabhach to the north of Ballater but didn't know it's name or really where it started. I found the start of the fire road climb leading up from the Pass Of Ballater road pretty easily but as it looped round the back of the hill it felt like a very long, very draggy one since I was riding a fully human-powered bike on a warm July afternoon with quite a few kilometres already ridden and few hundred metres already climbed. When I finally got to the top and found the mast (it's tough to miss!) I had to have a more careful look for the actual start of the trail but it soon presented itself off to the south. I thirstily drained the last drops of my day's water and pedalled off full of hope to follow the tempting strip of sinuous brown dirt leading off and down into the trees... After a mellow enough start the trail soon heads more steeply down and through a series of rocky, rooty, steep turns. This continues pretty unrelentingly for a kilometre or so until the more swoopy, flowy sections near the bottom. As ever, the video footage really doesn't give much of an idea how steep some of the sections are, but riding it blind and with weary legs was interesting to say the least! Properly fun though. When I eventually drifted back on to the fire road and the end of the trail, my thighs and forearms definitely knew they had just been put through their steep, techy paces! I would have loved to loop round and have another couple of runs at Mastermind now I knew what to expect but my legs had other ideas and I instead cruised wearily back to base in Ballater... I will be back! Ridden on my @CoticBikesUK RocketMAX, filmed on an @insta360 One RS, and edited in @ShotcutApp.
