Managers need to keep in mind that when delivering feedback they want to make sure that they have an open and honest conversation with their employees. Here are a few reasons why managers may be reluctant to give feedback: 1.Managers are often uncomfortable discussing performance weaknesses with employees as employees tend to become defensive 2. Employees tend to have an inflated assessment of their own performance 3. Managers may fear having to hire and train someone new 4. The performance appraisal process that’s in place is not conducive to the work environment Tips for successful feedback sessions: 1. Prevent surprises 2. Use specific concrete examples 3. Focus on goals 4. Listen as well as talk 5. Be honest 6. Treat employees with respect When Delivering feedback identify the area people feel most defensive about and monitor them carefully when they hear feedback about it. This will help you more constructively provide constructive feedback for them in the future.
