The P-51H was designed as the ultimate refinement of the Mustang line. It was lighter, faster, and more advanced than the combat-proven (and more widely-known) P-51D. It entered production in early 1945, just as World War II in Europe was ending and months before Japan’s surrender in the Pacific. By the time squadrons were being equipped and training on the H-model, the war was effectively over. Designed in late 1944 as a lighter, higher-performance follow-on to the ubiquitous P-51D, the H model incorporated an extensively revised, weight-reduced airframe; a taller tailfin for better directional stability; a raised pilot position and improved access to guns/ammunition; a more streamlined radiator installation; and the V-1650-9 Merlin with water-injection/automatic boost control for higher war-emergency power. The result was a noticeably quicker aeroplane: with the lighter structure, improved aerodynamics and the more powerful engine, the P-51H could reach speeds in the region of the high-four-hundreds mph. Because the H arrived very late in WWII (it was intended for the planned invasion of Japan) only a small number were completed and even fewer survived the decades that followed. Today the P-51H is rare among warbirds with only a handful of survivors and even fewer airworthy.
