See Madeira's ICONIC triangular houses in Santana! 🏡 This 2025 travel guide explores the famous Casas Típicas, BUT I also stumbled upon the amazing Festa dos Compadres festival! Join me for culture, scenery & fun on Madeira's North Coast. Join me for an exploration focused entirely on Santana, Madeira. We get up close with the iconic Casas Típicas de Santana, learning a bit about the history behind these unique A-frame thatched houses that are a symbol of the island's heritage. See the preserved examples in the town centre and understand why they were built that way for the North Coast climate. Santana itself is spread across lush green hills, offering a glimpse into the agricultural heartland of North Madeira. As I wandered around Santana, I realised something else was going on – the town was setting up for the Festa dos Compadres, a traditional Madeiran festival marking the run-up to Carnival and the end of winter! Seeing the preparations starting and knowing it would get busier later, I decided to take a scenic walk out towards the dramatic coastline first, heading for the Rocha do Navio viewpoint. The walk itself offers lovely views across the farmland and down towards the sea. Reaching Rocha do Navio ('Rock of the Ship' - named after an old shipwreck below) rewards you with simply breathtaking views. We look down from the clifftop viewpoint onto the isolated 'fajã' below – a small area of cultivated land traditionally accessed by a very steep cable car (which was unfortunately closed during my visit!). Even without the ride, the perspective looking down on the tiny fields and watching the Atlantic waves crash against the immense cliffs is incredible. Heading back into Santana town centre, the Festa dos Compadres was now properly underway and the whole place was buzzing! It's their traditional bash to say cheerio to winter, and the atmosphere was fantastic. There were colourful decorations up, parades moving through featuring these huge, funny-looking satirical figures, and you could hear lively traditional Madeiran music everywhere. I saw people folk dancing in costume and loads of stalls lining the streets selling local handicrafts and tempting food – you could definitely smell good things cooking! Just a great, fun, noisy, authentic community celebration happening right there in the street – brilliant luck to catch it. It was amazing timing and shows how sometimes the best travel moments are unplanned. This video captures that perfect Madeiran blend – unique cultural traditions like the iconic houses and the lively festival, combined with absolutely stunning natural scenery and coastal views, all found in and around Santana. If you're planning a Madeira holiday or vacation in 2025 or beyond, this area offers something really special. 00:00 Welcome to Santana! 00:56 Exploring Santana & the Casas Típicas 02:47 Finding the Festa dos Compadres 07:06 Walk to Rocha do Navio 10:33 Rocha do Navio Viewpoint (Cliffs & Fajã) 11:19 Return to the Festa dos Compadres!
