July 12, 2024 -- I continued my visit to Voyageurs National Park with another cruise, this one leaving the Ash River Visitor Center and heading to the Kettle Falls Recreation Area. Along the way we passed several notable landmarks including Tar Point (a source of natural tar that was used to waterproof fishing nets) and an island owed by I.W. Stevens (he purchased it in 1932, ran the Pine Cove Resort from 1937-1959, and stayed another 20 years year-round on the island before leaving at age 94). We learned the water flows north from the lakes into Hudson Bay and into the Arctic watershed. We traveled through the Voyageur Narrows, the same waters the French-Canadian Voyageurs plied from the late 1600s until the mid-1800s. We were given two hours to explore the Kettle Falls area, so I visited the historic Kettle Falls Hotel, it's lopsided bar and the Kettle Falls Dam, which was put in use in 1914 for two purposes: 1) to raise the water level to make it easier to transport lumber and 2) for hydroelectric power generation for the saw mills.
