Leaving the incredible city of Rio De Janiero we start heading inland on the Estrada Real. The Estrada Real in Brazil is a collection of roads that lead from the the mining areas of the inland province of Minas Gerais down to the coast (Rio de Janiero and Paraty). These roads were built to get minerals (gold, diamonds etc.) to port for shipping back to Portugal, and to get supplies (food, building materials, slaves etc.) up to the mining areas. The history of these roads and towns is fascinating. During the 18th Century the town of Ouro Preto (formerly "Vila Rica", or "Rich Village") was one of the most populous and wealthiest cities in the Americas. After Paraty this was definitely my favourite Colonial city in Brazil, and one of the most interesting in Latin America.
