In this debate, two Yoruba men stood on completely different sides of identity and consciousness. JustMe, who identifies as Yoruba, chose to defend Islam and Saudi culture while speaking against the traditions and heritage of his own people. His stance reflects the deep impact of long-term religious conditioning, where loyalty to a foreign belief system outweighs understanding and respect for one’s roots. On the other side, Etolaye—who also comes from a Muslim background—represents a different path. Through reflection and critical thinking, he began reconnecting with Yoruba culture and tradition. With the knowledge he has gathered so far, Etolaye shows readiness and courage to defend his roots, even while still learning and growing. This debate highlights a powerful contrast: one choosing inherited belief over identity, and the other choosing awareness, questioning, and cultural reconnection. It raises an important question for viewers—what does it truly mean to be Yoruba, and who should speak for our culture? In this Yoruba Live broadcast, we think Yoruba first and speak the hard truth: religion has become a heavy burden on the Yoruba people. Foreign religions, especially Islam and Christianity, came with promises of salvation but left us disconnected from our ancestors, our culture, and our spiritual identity. Yoruba people, especially those living in America, Canada, the UK, Germany, and worldwide, it’s time to ask deep questions. Why has religion not moved us forward as a people?
