The Sharing of Blessings 01:46 The Pali Canon, also known as the Tipitaka, is the standard collection of scriptures in the Theravada Buddhist tradition. It is considered one of the earliest and most comprehensive collections of Buddhist teachings attributed to Siddhartha Gautama, the historical Buddha. The Pali Canon is divided into three main sections, known as "pitakas" or "baskets": Vinaya Pitaka Contains rules and guidelines for monastic discipline and conduct for monks and nuns. Sutta Pitaka Comprises a wide range of discourses attributed to the Buddha, covering ethics, philosophy, and practical advice. Abhidhamma Pitaka Focuses on analytical and philosophical teachings, exploring the nature of reality and the mind. The teachings of the Buddha were initially preserved orally. It is believed that they were first written down in Sri Lanka around the 1st century BCE during the Fourth Buddhist Council. The existing Pali Canon was extensively redacted in the 5th or 6th century CE, which has led to some debate among scholars regarding its authenticity and historical accuracy. The Pali Canon is written in Pali, a language closely related to the dialects spoken during the Buddha's time. Many translations of the Canon are available in English and other languages, making it accessible to a wider audience. Various organizations, such as the Pali Text Society, promote the study and publication of Pali texts and translations.
