Zoom out of Gilani and Wen leaving STORYLINE Pakistani Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani arrived in Beijing on Wednesday, where he met Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao. Gilani had arrived in China on Tuesday evening, flying into Shanghai at the start of a four-day visit, according to the official Xinhua News Agency. He was welcomed to the capital Beijing on Wednesday during an official ceremony. Later in the day, the two leaders held a meeting in which Wen emphasised the friendly relationship between the two countries. "No matter how the international landscape changes, China and Pakistan will forever remain good neighbours, good friends, good partners and good brothers," Wen said. Although Gilani's visit was planned well in advance, it comes at a critical time for his country's relations with the US, which have been thrown into crisis over the American raid that killed Osama bin Laden in the northern Pakistani city of Abbottabad on May 2. Pakistan has called it a violation of its sovereignty and threatened to retaliate if there are any similar operations in the future. While American politicians roundly criticised Pakistan's failure to find bin Laden's hide-out - or brought up the possibility that officials were protecting him - China offered welcome reassurance, praising Pakistan as resolute in the fight against insurgency. Gilani made Pakistan's appreciation clear, singling out China in a testy May 9 speech to parliament as Islamabad's "all-weather friend." After the talks both leaders attended a signing ceremony in which the two countries signed three cooperative agreements on trade, finance and mine industry. Prime Minister Gilani will also be meeting President Hu Jintao during his stay in Beijing. China-Pakistan ties were forged shortly after the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949, and have thrived in part on both countries' distrust of their mutual neighbour India. Gilani's visit is formally pitched as part of celebrations of the 60th anniversary of diplomatic ties, and he is scheduled to meet top Chinese leaders.
