From an asset allocation perspective, these technical patterns argue for a bullish commitment to gold for 2025 and beyond for all investors in all major currencies. Seasoned end game investor Rafi Farber discussed a "mini gold squeeze" in the market, marked by declining open interest in gold futures and rising prices. According to Farber, open interest has dropped significantly, from approximately 545,000 contracts to 498,000. Over the same period, the price of gold has risen by 134 dollars. Between 14—20 November, open interest fell by over 34,000 contracts, yet gold rose from 2564 to 2670 dollars currently. Virtually all the fall in open interest has been in December contracts not being rolled over into later maturities. Based on fundamentals, Rafi predicts gold is unlikely to drop much further unless a major financial crisis occurs. Concurrently, he mentions any dip as a last chance to buy before potential hyperinflation. Farber expects gold to rise, returning to and surpassing previous highs soon. Gold is on track for its best return since 2010, outpacing even 2020's 25.1% gain as the COVID-19 pandemic accelerated doomsday investment bets. While discussing market trends, Rafi Farber highlights that reverse repos have remained near 200 billion dollars over the past month. He suggests that issuing additional treasury bills may be necessary to reduce this figure to zero, potentially setting the stage for the next banking crisis. The likelihood of future failure is significantly higher for banks with lower solvency and a greater reliance on expensive and risk-sensitive funding sources. Moreover, bank fundamentals forecast the major waves of bank failures in US history, including the failures in the Great Depression and Great Recession. In his analysis, Rafi Farber noted that the Fed's balance sheet has shrunk for six consecutive weeks, the fastest QT pace since it slowed in June 2023. He explained that part of this acceleration stems from liquidating the Bank Term Funding Program, introduced during the regional bank bailout in March 2023. For the full year 2024, the operating loss will likely fall below 85 billion dollars. For the year 2023, the Fed reported an operating loss of 114 billion dollars. Depending on its future interest rate policies and the pace of QT, it will take several more years before the Fed stops generating operating losses. Furthermore, Rafi emphasizes that the continued acceleration of quantitative tightening will likely reduce reverse repos to zero more quickly and expedite the arrival of what he predicts will be the "final banking crisis." Despite the delay, Farber sees this crisis as inevitable and approaching. Bank of America alone reported a staggering 116 billion dollars in losses over the past three years. The strain on the financial system is palpable. If these challenges continue, the Fed will likely keep cutting rates to stabilize the banking sector, reduce borrowing costs, and prevent a collapse in the real estate market.
