The LTHT Community of Practice received funding to engage with the University of the Arts / Chelsea Collections & Archive. We got hooked on the Bow Gamelan & Paul Burwell Archive - three boxes containing various records, sketches and ephemera performed with Burwell, including David Toop, Stephen Cripps, Christopher Small, Richard Deacon and Bob Cobbing. Through the generous invitation of University of Kent Senior Lecturer, Tim Meacham we were able to set up a public event in the Historic Dockyard Chatham Rope Walk and publicly perform various records to awaken the archive and actively involve art and design students from UAL and University of Kent in various forms of innovative, collaborative 'improvised' sound making inspired by our research into (Bow) Gamelan culture. Ropery Songs took place on Monday 29th May 2017and introduced visitors to readings from the Bow Gamelan & Paul Burwell Archive – a selection of 12 reproduced archival sheets. These were juxtapositioned with corresponding projections from LTHT events, improvised sound, gamelan and interactions, a student-designed performance by Chase Coley (MA Sound Arts LCC) in the hope to find ‘slack’ within the rich visual and sound interrelations. Many Thanks to all involved!
