Song : ChinnaChiru Penpole Composer : Ulundoorpettai Shanmugasundaram Ragam : Sindubhairavi Guru : Thiru Muthu Meenakshi Performance : Harini This song was written by Ulundoorpettai Shanmugasundaram and sung by Seerkaazhi Govindarajan on site when both of them visited Cidambaram temple decades ago. A request was made to them and they complied forthwith. The song was about goddess ShivakAmi at the temple (on the banks of the temple tank called Sivagangai). The goddess’s idol is of small stature and hence the description "sinnajciru pen pole" (small girl) wearing "sitradai' (dhavani or half-saree). It then goes on to describe the beauty of the goddess and her dancing skills equal to that of Lord Nataraja. Goddess ShivakAmi who has a separate sanctum in the same temple is also known by the names of Durga, and Kali. The song in Thamizh script, to be followed in Roman script and the meaning of the lines in English are given below. The lyrics in Roman script Sinnanjiru penbole sitradai idai udutti sivagangai kulattaruge sridurkkai sirittiruppal** pennavalin kannazhagai pesi mudiyadu perazhaguk kidaga Veronrum kidaiyadu || minnalaippol meni annai sivakami inbamellAm taruval ennamellAm niraival pinnal jadai pottu piccippu sudiduval pittanukku inaiyaga narttanam adiduval || Meaning: 1. Wearing a dAvaNi (half-saree) around the waist and shoulder like a little girl, she (Sri Durga) sits (smiling) on the banks of the Sivagangai tank (in the temple premises). 2. The beauty of the girl’s eyes is beyond description. There is nothing else which can match her splendorous beauty. 3. Mother ShivakAmi’s body has the appearance of the brilliant lightning (with a slender waist). She confers happiness to us and occupies our thoughts. Wearing her hair in braids and adorning it with jasmine flowers she can dance equal to the lord of dance (her consort who has been characterized as “piththan” --meaning “maniac” by one of his devotees-- ---Sundaramoorthy nayanar).
