In this video, Kathleen Ng Shiu, Project Lead for Polynator Kaiways (PK), shares the journey of a community-led initiative dedicated to protecting our essential pollinators. While most people think of bees, the PK project highlights the vital roles played by birds, bats, geckos, and even the often-maligned green blowfly—all of which are necessary for the food (kai) we love. What is a Polynator Kaiway? The city can be a lonely place for pollinators. Urban development has stripped away their natural habitats, essentially making them "homeless". Polynator Kaiway was created to fix this by: Providing Essentials: Creating networks of homes, shelter, water, and the right kind of kai for pollinators. Education & Outreach: Developing programs for schools and churches to turn unused spaces, like fence lines, into pollinator havens. Creative Awareness: Using "striking" visual resources, such as pollinator cutouts inspired by the Batman silhouette, to spark conversation and community action. Impact & Successes Supported by a grant from Foundation North, the project has successfully: Partnered with Schools: Collaborated with Puhinui School and Flat Bush Primary to educate students on how to care for their local ecosystem. Launched "Spray-Free Manukau": A campaign encouraging residents to opt out of chemical spraying to create safer environments for insects and animals. Scaled Up: Engaged hundreds of people through regional roadshows and major events like ASB Polyfest. Where To From Here? The journey doesn’t stop here!. We are currently working on: The Puhinui Domain Mural: A permanent artistic landmark to promote pollinator care. Ongoing Activations: Growing our fruit orchards and expanding spray-free zones across South Auckland. So, what can YOU do to look after our pollinators? Join the movement and help us make our city a place where nature can thrive. 🦋✨
