Learn the symptoms of COVID-19 and how you can help prevent spreading the virus. The coronavirus is part of a large family of viruses, common in both animals and humans. In some cases, but very rarely, strains that infect animals can evolve and make humans sick, like what happened in the past SARS and MERS outbreaks, and what scientists suspect happened in the Wuhan, China coronavirus outbreak. Coronavirus symptoms can include mild to severe fever, cough, and shortness of breath — but some patients can develop harsher lung conditions, including pneumonia and bronchitis. Health officials believe past coronaviruses spread person-to-person much like the flu – through tiny droplets that take to the air when an infected person coughs or sneezes. Doctors can treat coronavirus symptoms, but there’s no specific drug to fight the virus itself. If you have shortness of breath, cough, and fever, stay home from work, skip social activities and call your doctor’s office right away. A vaccine could one day prevent or lessen the impact of the virus, but there isn’t one available yet. For now, check CDC dot gov for the most up-to-date guidance on treatment and prevention. Older adults and people with weakened immune systems could face more serious complications from the infection. Avoid travel to areas with coronavirus outbreaks. And take normal flu season precautions — wash your hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water before eating and avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. A properly worn face mask that creates a tight seal around your nose and mouth may help reduce your chances of infection.
