BNSF Railway has acquired a wide variety of locomotives over the years. While the vast majority of trains are pulled by General Electric Evolution series units these days, a number of the older locomotives are still on hand to assist with some of the shorter runs. Among these, the old Electromotive Division built locomotives are a fan favorite. Most of the long surviving EMD units came from predecessor railroads Santa Fe and Burlington Northern and include larger, 6 axle SD series diesels like the SD40-2, SD60M, and SD75M along with a very large fleet of the smaller four axle GP series locomotives. Some of these units are 30, 40, and even 50 years old and still out on the rails pulling trains. In this video, I’d like to take a look at a number of these tried and true EMD workhorses as they work on the high iron. Our focus will be in the Pacific Northwest region of the BNSF system. We’ll see several scenes of EMD locomotives powering the many regional manifests in Washington State as well as on some of the locals and the very unique “Garbage Trains”.
