"China appreciates the American position of solving the nuclear issue through talks. We hope that the US side can start talks with DPRK with a flexible attitude because only through talks can the tense situation on the Korean Peninsula be relaxed, the peace on the peninsula be maintained and non-nuclearisation status on the Peninsula be achieved. This is conducive to the peace, stability and development of northeast Asia - as well as suits the interests of all nations, including the United States." 4. Cutaway journalist 5. Wide shot press conference STORYLINE: China on Thursday said it wanted to see tensions over North Korea settled diplomatically. Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan discussed North Korean-US relations during talks with French Foreign Minister Dominique de Villepin in Beijing. De Villepin is visiting Beijing - the North's last major ally - amid appeals by France for the isolated nation to give up nuclear work that its neighbours fear could produce weapons. Tang stressed the importance of preventing tensions escalating over North Korea, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue told reporters at a press briefing. She added that the key to break the stalemate between the US and North Korea was dialogue. Speaking on Iraq, Zhang quoted Tang as affirming China's insistence that Iraq tensions should be resolved diplomatically - and within the framework of the United Nations.
