Sivalingam is one of the foremost exponents of the Nadaswaram, the classical wind instrument of South India. Born on July 7, 1944, he began his musical training under his father, Seshampatti P. Thirthagiri, and was inspired by legendary Nadaswaram artists such as Karaikurichi Arunachalam and T. N. Rajarathnam Pillai. He pursued formal training in Tanjore and later in Chennai, where he graduated with a “Vadhya Visharadh” degree in 1971 from the College of Carnatic Music. Guided by stalwarts like Keevalur N. G. Ganesan and Keeranur Ramaswami Pillai, he developed a unique style known for its soulful raga interpretations and strict adherence to tradition. Over a career spanning more than five decades, Sivalingam has performed across India and internationally, representing the rich heritage of Carnatic music at festivals, concerts, and global Tamil conferences. He has served as a top-grade artist for All India Radio and Doordarshan and has trained numerous students from India and abroad, including from Sweden and Denmark, helping globalize the reach of the Nadaswaram tradition. He has also served as an adjudicator for auditions and exams for various institutions. His contributions have earned him numerous accolades, including the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, Kalaimamani, Isai Perarignar, TTK Award from The Music Academy (Chennai), and the prestigious Padma Shri in 2024. He was also honored as the Asthana Vidwan of Sri Kanchi Kamakoti Peetam and was featured on the ICCR’s international artist panel.
