Description: This video shows a grouping (called a sorus) of fern sporangia, releasing spores. It was videoed under 30x magnification. The heating and drying effect of the microscope light caused many of the sporangia to release their spores spontaneously. This was videoed in real time. Note the beautiful yellow color of this fern’s spores and how their color and shape is visible through the walls of the full sporangia. Note, also, the light brown color of the empty sporangia.
