What are established Orchids | The unquestionable benefit of inorganic media

Today we debate a bit about what an established orchid is, why we strive to bring our orchids to this state and why inorganic medium, with all its cons, has an unquestionable benefit over traditional, organic medium. ▼▼▼More info below!▼▼▼ Established orchids are not necessarily perfectly healthy orchids, due to the unpredictable nature of the hobby. They are however very strong in the face of stress or disease. Establishment refers to the state of the root system more than anything else. An orchid with an adequate root system will be hydrated and well fed, provided proper conditions too. From here only good things can occur. These orchids bloom better, grow faster and bigger, resist disease better and generally are more appealing to look at. We all want our orchids to be that way and they can all be.. with care and patience :) Rule No. 1: as less repottings as possible! Organic medium is wonderful and it made the hobby possible. It will never however avoid set backs and 'unestablishing'. Here is where inorganic media comes in: it's not natural, it doesn't look appealing maybe, it has flaws and behaves different in different climates, it stays cold (clay), it needs washing or preparing, it is anything but familiar to orchids... and it doesn't unestablish orchids.
