Do the pigments you start learning with influence your painting habits? This has been on my mind recently upon noticing my everyday cool red Quinacridone Rose (PV19) has been nearly used up again. The pigment PV19 comes in a variety of shades, typically covering the cool red to pink to warm violet range. Quinacridone Rose is a common hue found across the majority of watercolour ranges, alongside it's sister Quinacridone Violet sharing the same pigment number. With a restock now in the not-too-distant horizon, I felt this was a good opportunity to explore the cool red to warm violet range by playing with Quinacridone Violet. This will help broaden my colour mixing and pigment knowledge, but also help me figure out the answer to that initial question. Do I use Quin Rose because it's what I started with, or do I actually prefer it? For the first test of this paint, I'll be sharing my favourite method of learning about paints and palettes. This method focuses more on the range of mixes available between pigments. Instead of the typical grid method you will see in a lot of videos (which is great in its own way!), I have set up a sheet of swatches gradually adding more of the PV19 Violet to different pigments. This helps me develop a wider understanding of the colour mixing potential of a pigment. I'm not sure where I first saw this method, but other artists such as Victoria Gedvillas and Denise Soden both use it to explore gradual shifts in mixes. 🦋TIMESTAMPS🦋 00:00 - Intro 00:49 - The different PV19 hues 02:10 - My first cool-red primary 06:48 - The mixing chart 11:61 - Colour mix walkthrough 22:05 - What next? 23:09 - Watercolour triads 🦋CONNECT WITH ME🦋 For more artwork and sketches check out my website: https://www.daenafae.com/ Love art blogs?
