The number of people paying higher-rate income tax could pass 10 million, as Chancellor Rachel Reeves is expected to extend the income tax threshold freeze until 2030. The freeze means workers earning over £50,271 will be pushed into the 40% tax band as wages rise, without the Government officially increasing tax rates. Economists warn this could drag 790,000 more workers into higher-rate tax and raise £8.3bn for the Treasury. The Institute for Fiscal Studies says it amounts to a stealth tax rise hitting full-time workers, part-time workers, minimum wage earners and some low-income pensioners.
