Erlach, a small town with about 1,400 inhabitants, which used to be the capital of the district of the same name, is situated between St. Peter's Island and the Jolimont - a hill that rises 160m above Erlach, directly on the shore of Lake Biel. On the side of this hill, the castle of Erlach has been standing since 1100. Further to the south stands the Ulrich Church, which was built around the first millennium. The present church tower was built in 1460. The area around Erlach has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age, a pile-dwelling settlement was found in the north-west and artifacts from the Roman and Celtic periods have also been found. Today, the St. Johannsen correctional facility is located in the northwest. While presumably former "long-term visitors" rate the institution with a maximum of 1 star on Google, visitors to the Christmas market in the correctional facility are brightly enthusiastic, funny...... A little further southwest of the castle is the small village of Tschugg, from which, by the way, comes the patrician family of Berseth. The strong Tschugger were once taken to Bern as guards and bodyguards by the Bernese patricians who lodged in Tschugg during their summer travels.
