How to Get Rid of Acne Scars | Dermal Filler/Subcision | Acne Scar Combination Tx | Part 1 | Dr Emer

Acne Scars form when a breakout penetrates the skin deeply and damages the tissues beneath it. Today, Dr. Jason Emer did an extensive combination treatment to help his patient with acne scarring. What typically happens when you have acne is that the inflammation causes the fat cells and the collagen to break down, giving the skin a cobblestone-like appearance. To treat scars, Dr. Emer uses combination treatments and multiple components, which will help improve the appearance of his patient and improve her overall confidence. The first component of the acne scarring treatment is a dermal filler named Bellafill, which helps build collagen over time. Bellafill looks white and cloudy, which is non-resorbable polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) microspheres. Dr. Jason Emer calls Bellafill the spider web filler (which grabs the skin underneath and holds on to it, building collagen over time). For today’s patient, Dr. Jason Emer injected little thread-like injections along with the problem areas. He superficially injects micro aliquots into the craters of the scar, to which then, Bellafill will build collagen in the cavities, helping improve the dips and appearance of the scar. Once injected, the Bellafill product can last up to 5-10 years. The second component of the acne scarring treatment is a subcision, which Dr. Emer makes a little entrance site to allow the cannula to go inside and inject numbing medication underneath the Bellafill. After adding the numbing medication, Dr. Emer begins to break apart the tissue in the problem areas. After years of perfecting his technique, he is now a master of breaking down the fabric of the skin so that the skin may build collagen over time, improving the appearance of the skin and giving the patient a more even texture on the surface. During the subcision component, patients describe the feeling as that of a scratching sensation as the cannula moves back and forth. There is little to no pain during subcision because of the nerve blocks, numbing cream, and numbing medication. The downtime of subcision is usually about 1-2 weeks.
