Why Hamas will not surrender | David Hearst | Opinion

In this opinion video, David Hearst, editor-in-chief of Middle East Eye, explains why Hamas will never surrender, as it would be tantamount to the surrender of the Palestinian cause itself. Eighteen months into the war, with Gaza under total blockade and following two broken peace deals, Hearst says that Israeli and US officials are pursuing ethnic cleansing, not peace. Meanwhile, Hamas, Hearst claims, has already achieved one strategic objective: restoring the Palestinian cause to the centre of the global conversation, with global opinion increasingly shifting in Palestine’s favour. The war has turned Gaza into sacred ground for Palestinians, unifying resistance and public support across communities, including those not aligned with Hamas ideologically. Unlike Fatah in previous generations, Hamas has remained on the ground, rejecting offers to flee into exile. Hearst concludes that Netanyahu must make a choice: escalate a forever war that Israel cannot sustain, or recognise that military force cannot erase a people’s will to resist.
