Emil Schemitsch is an international research leader in orthopaedic trauma and musculoskeletal injury care. He is the Chair of the Department of Surgery at Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry, and has served as President of both the Canadian Orthopaedic Association and the Orthopaedic Trauma Association. His work has significantly advanced patient care in fracture treatment, joint replacement, and musculoskeletal trauma. A prolific researcher with over 650 publications and more than $36 million in grant funding. Dr. Schemitsch’s research has had a global impact, helping to reduce disability caused by bone fractures and degenerative conditions. His studies have also informed screening for intimate partner violence in orthopaedic clinics and helped shape best practices in trauma care. His work has been cited over 29,000 times, and he is a five-time recipient of the Founder’s Medal for Research. Dr. Schemitsch presented his lecture, Clinical Research in Orthopaedic Trauma: Lessons Learned!, at the 2025 Distinguished University Professors Lecture. Uploaded by: Western Secretariat Events
