吳冠中表示不喜歡在鏡頭前「演」寫生，擔心公眾誤解畫家四出寫生的艱辛。Wu Guanzhong said he disliked doing live sketching "performances" in front of a camera, worried that the audiences might not understand how hard for artists to sketch on the road. 2002年，考慮其教育意義，他破例接受香港藝術館邀請，進行生平唯一一次公開的寫生。 In 2002, for the sake of education, he made an exception and accepted HKMoA's invitation to give a demonstration. It was the only time Wu Guanzhong had ever sketch live before an audience. 當天天文台發出「黃色暴雨警告」，亦未影響了吳冠中發揮。 The Hong Kong Observatory issued the Amber Rainstorm Warning Signal that day but it did not affect his masterly display. 過程中他示範「搬家寫生」，不斷移動站立點將景物重組納入畫面，又隨手徵用工作人員的餐車作畫架，即興與親民形象深入民心。 He demonstrated "move-the-site" sketching, frequently changing his vantage points to recompose the scenery, and casually use the "dinning-cart" prepared by the staff as his easal. His improvisation and "down-to-earth approach won the hearts of many. 完成的寫生作品也送贈給香港藝術館，成為這次示範活動的珍貴紀念。 The Museum was grateful for his generous donation of his finished work.
