How Physics Wallah Is Winning - Explained

Physics Wallah recently raised $210 million dollars at a valuation of $2.8 billion dollars - the largest Edtech funding in almost 2 years. While EdTech giants like Unacademy who used to be the leaders are struggling, Physics Wallah is doing surprisingly well for some unexplained reason. Last year, it ranked 4th in the EdTech space with a revenue of Rs. 798 crores. But in just 12 months, it leapt to the 2nd spot. Its revenue increased by 2.5 times to Rs. 2,000 crores. And this was in a period when most competitors had no revenue growth while Unacademy actually saw a decline. But what makes this feat even more interesting is a comparison of their funding. Byju’s raised nearly $5 billion dollar before it went bankrupt, while Unacademy has raised $880 million dollars across 12 funding rounds. But the recent $210 million raise is PhysicsWallah’s second round. Their first round was in 2022 when they raised $100 million dollars and became a unicorn. And before that, they operated as a bootstrapped startup. Even in the latest funding round, investors came to them instead of them actively looking for investors. And if you look at their balance sheet, you will understand why. And all of this has been achieved while offering courses at 1/10th the price of its competitors. As of today, they have over 4.6 crore subscribers on YouTube and 5.5 Lakh paying students. So how is PhysicsWallah managing to grow and stay profitable while all others are doing crores in losses? How do they offer courses at 1/10th the price of their competitors and still make money?
