Not everyone is flexible. Not everyone is limber. Not everyone can move fast from one pose to another. Luckily, in pure hatha yoga, none of these qualities are needed. Instead of moving from one pose to another in a smooth and constant flowing manner, we hold each pose for 1, 2, 3 or more minutes. Then we move quietly to the next pose. The secret to doing pure hatha yoga is to focus the mind on the stretch. When you focus the mind on the stretch, that's when there is stillness, peace - that's where you will find the self. Many people think flexibility is what hatha yoga is all about. But flexibility is merely a side benefit to doing hatha yoga. The primary focus of hatha yoga is not flexibility nor is it health. Instead, the primary focus of hatha yoga is to help one calm the mind by forcing you to focus on nothing but the stretch. Any health benefits and flexibility you obtain from doing hatha yoga is just that, a benefit. So whether you are flexible or not does not matter. Flexible and inflexible people, such as myself, can all equally focus the mind on the stretch.
