Fietas Soul of the Suburb 2017 Synopsis: The once vibrant and colourful suburb of Fietas, Pageview is on the brink of urban redevelopment. Presently, numerous fenced-off empty plots scar the neighbourhood and any redevelopment is stagnant due to numerous land claim disputes. Ironically, the pavements surrounding the empty plots provide homes for a large homeless community. The future of the suburb is unknown. If the land claims disputes are resolved and an urban redevelopment plan goes ahead, the soul of the suburb could be under threat as it aspires to become something new. Two unlikely friends capture the past and present soul of the suburb through their lived experiences. One is a South African native born in Fietas and rendered homeless due to the forced removals that took place under the apartheid government. The other is an architect offering valuable insights experienced through practicing in the neighbourhood for a number of years. Director’s Profile: Anita Szentesi is a Johannesburg-based architect and lecturer. In 2016, she began her journey towards becoming a filmmaker, and graduated in 2018 with a Master of Arts Film and TV from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her main focus has been to explore the multiple relationships between film and architecture. As a filmmaker, her vision is to reveal the relationship of place-making and people in the city through poetic aesthetic representations. She aims to explore the urban fabric of Johannesburg through the lens of the camera, revealing the place-making notions of architectural theory as well as explore strong human-place connections linked to race relations and identity.
