Gail Levin, whose study of Edward Hopper remains the standard on the subject, now turns her seasoned lens on Lee Krasner, whose fiercely artistic life, as the wife of Jackson Pollock, has been sadly overshadowed. Having met her inebriated husband-to-be at an Artists Union dance, Lee Krasner seconded her life in New York and her own career to an uncertain future together on Long Island. Moving in artistic circles of the highest order, but with predictably stormy ups and downs, their marriage nonetheless survived, fame flowered, and both found commercial success. This is a 500-page biography so thoroughly researched that it is unlikely to be emulated in our lifetime. But it is also extremely readable; and the author is to be warmly commended for a fascinating study of a resourceful and creative artist, who richly deserves to come into her own.
