So many times I have perfected a wonderful command-line statement, like an Imagemagick recipe or a command to archive and organize five years worth of critical screenshots, only to see all of it rapidly disappear in the far-too-short command history. If the command history is extended, then it will reduce performance, and even worse, there are times (especially on Mac OS) when none of the bash configuration files are run, thereby overriding any history length that you set. Suddenly, all of your precious commands are deleted. The solution is to permanently log all your command, organized by date, in a fashion suitable for keeping, auditing, and/or most importantly using rather than losing the commands that you have created! This is the very next step that I always perform after the fresh installation of a new operating system.
