The first step in my project to air layer my Fiddle Leaf Fig - it was getting too tall for my space, and growing taller than my windows, so I decided to air layer it. With this technique, I am essentially creating an enormous cutting that has had a chance to grow roots while still attached to the existing rootball. When the time comes, I can cut the air layered portion of the Fig tree, leaving me with a leafless stump that will hopefully sprout fresh branches to become a more compact, densely leafed specimen, and a new plant, significantly shorter, with branches far lower on the trunk. When the time comes to make the chop, I will also reduce the length of the existing branches on the air layered portion in order to reduce the amount of foliage and tissue that the new rootball will need to support, and encourage further branching. If all goes as planned, I will have two shorter, fuller Fiddle Leaf Figs, plus extra material to propagate, which will buy me some more time before they outgrow my windows again!
