The Second World War started on 1 September 1939 when Nazi Germany invaded Poland. Poland soon found itself fighting a two-front war when the Soviet Union invaded from the east on 17 September. Warsaw officially surrendered to the Germans on 28 September, and one day later, in accordance with the secret protocol of their non-aggression pact, Germany and the Soviet Union partitioned Poland. After the Soviet invasion, Lviv was incorporated into the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic, marking the beginning of significant political and social upheaval for the city's inhabitants. Under Soviet rule from 1939 to 1941, Lviv underwent forced Sovietization. Private enterprises were nationalized, religious institutions were suppressed, and political organizations were disbanded. The Soviet authorities targeted the Polish intelligentsia, landowners, and anyone deemed a threat to the new regime. Tens of thousands of residents were arrested; many were deported to labor camps in Siberia, while others were executed. This period instilled a pervasive sense of fear and resentment among the local population. During this time, the Jewish community's experience was complex and while some Jews held positions in the Soviet administration, leading to perceptions of collaboration, many others suffered under the regime's oppressive policies. The association of Jews with Soviet authority, whether real or perceived, exacerbated existing anti-Semitic sentiments among both Ukrainians and Poles. On Sunday, 22 June 1941, Nazi Germany launched a massive invasion of the Soviet Union. Lviv was occupied by the Nazis in the early hours of 30 June 1941. Prior to the German invasion of the Soviet Union, some Ukrainian nationalists, specifically in the Organization of Ukrainian Nationalists - the OUN - had been working with the Germans. The OUN hoped that their collaboration with Nazi Germany would lead to the establishment of an independent Ukrainian state once the Soviets were defeated. However, the OUN itself was not a unified organization, as it was divided into two factions: the OUN-M, led by Andriy Melnyk, and the OUN-B, loyal to Stepan Bandera.
