Learn more about Inova Schar Heart and Vascular, https://www.inova.org/our-services/in... We share what you can expect after your heart surgery at Inova Schar Heart and Vascular. After surgery you will be in the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU). Many people after hear surgery will be placed on a ventilator. After you wake up the CVICU will help you return to normal breathing patterns as soon as possible, so they can remove the ventilator. While in the CVICU room you will have IV tube, chest tubes, temporary external pacemaker, foley catheter, machines that monitor your vitals and an incentive spirometer. You will be asked to use the incentive spirometer to help expand your lungs. Your loved ones are welcome to visit at any time. We ask visitors to sanitize their hands before entering the unit using the foam sanitizer placed outside of the unit and rooms, ring the bell at the unit entrance and please check-in with the unit secretary. Team members will help walk you step-by-step on how to recover safely. Some of the most important considerations after surgery, include: protecting your chest, sitting upright in a chair, expanding your lungs with a breathing tool and early and frequent walking. The Mended Hearts Program volunteers offer peer-to-peer visits. An important part of recovery is staying active. The step-down team will help you continue to build strength for discharge. You are free to ask questions throughout your stay. Our team members are here to help and we believe it is important for you to remain an active participant throughout your recovery. Your discharge plan will be personalized for you. A nurse patient care navigator will sit down with you to go over all of the details you need to know prior to discharge: what you need to do, what you can expect and what to keep an eye out for once you are home. Detailed discharge instructions will be reviewed and provided to you upon discharge. Within 24-hours of discharge a nurse will call you to check-in and within one week of discharge you will have an office visit with your surgeon. Outpatient cardiac rehab will be prescribed and it is highly recommended to increase your strength, flexibility, endurance and balance.
