2 September 2020 marks the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II, with the surrender of imperial Japan on this day in 1945. The impact of the war in determining the trajectory of global events can hardly be denied. The war effort in itself followed by the establishment of two blocs and the beginning of the Cold War determined much of world history from 1945 till the collapse of Soviet Union. The events of the bipolar world — with the USSR and the US as its two poles — have been studied intensively to understand the impact of the Cold War on international politics. The disintegration of the Soviet Union gave rise to the unipolar moment in our history and now the subsequent rise of China in the 21st century is leading to a more uncertain period. In this context, what are the lessons that history holds for us and what can we draw from the consequences of World War II that followed over the years? Some of these include the impact of the war, the setting up of the United Nations and other international institutions, the establishment of the capitalist and the Soviet bloc as well as the role and response of colonies/newly independent countries.
