Sylvia Plath’s interview with Peter Orr took place on October 30, 1962, for the British Council’s “The Poet’s Voice” series, in collaboration with the BBC. Conducted in a London studio, it’s one of the few recorded interviews with Plath, offering a rare glimpse into her thoughts on poetry, influences, and creative process just months before her death in February 1963. The interview captures Plath at a pivotal moment, just as she was producing some of her most iconic work. Her discussion of poetry as a visceral, almost physical act reflects the raw energy of poems like “Daddy” and “Lady Lazarus.” It’s also notable for her reflections on being an American poet in England, navigating cultural and literary divides. This audio was edited and denoised with subtitles by me.
